Im Erdgeschoss gibt es eine Bar, der Konzertsaal befindet sich in der ersten Etage. \u00dcber zwei Fl\u00fcgeltreppen gelangt man nach oben, ein altes Kassenh\u00e4uschen dient als Ticketbude. Der Konzertraum wirkt aufger\u00e4umt, ist bestuhlt. Die B\u00fchne am Kopfende ist breit, an den Seiten sind tischhohe Sitzb\u00e4nke angebracht. \u2018Ah, this is the balcony\u2018 wird <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> irgendwann w\u00e4hrend des Konzertes die Leute, die dort sitzen, fragend grinsend ansprechen. Die Bar im Erdgeschoss kommt wie aus <strong>Twin Peaks<\/strong>. Dicke rote Vorh\u00e4nge an den W\u00e4nden, Poster der aktuellen Dortmunder Jazztage h\u00e4ngen davor. Die Ledersitzhocker und St\u00fchle sind ebenfalls rot, der Boden ist schwarzwei\u00df gefliest. Ein sch\u00f6nes Ambiente, um an diesem nasskalten Novembertag das <strong>Howe Gelb Trio<\/strong> zu sehen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong>, wer wei\u00df das nicht, ist der ehemalige S\u00e4nger der ehemaligen amerikanischen Desertfolkrock Band <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong>, die in den 1990er Jahren einigerma\u00dfen erfolgreich war. Ich glaube, ich ah sie auch irgendwann mal im Vorprogramm von irgendwem. In den 2000er Jahren wurden <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong> personell neu zusammengestellt wurde, nachdem die urspr\u00fcnglichen Bandmitglieder <strong>Joey Burns<\/strong> und <strong>John Convertino<\/strong> <strong>Calexico<\/strong> gr\u00fcndeten, und weiterhin mit Tex-Mex dark Folk Country erfolgreich blieben. <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> erneuerte mit Musikern aus dem W\u00fcstenstaat D\u00e4nemark <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong>, produzierte weitere Alben, blieb aber eher semi-erfolgreich. Zumindest wurden Calexico gr\u00f6\u00dfer &#8211; wenn ich das so sagen kann &#8211; als <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong>. Die Frage nach dem warum ist m\u00fc\u00dfig, am Output kann es nicht gelegen haben. Es sind an die 20 Platten, die <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> mit <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong> und solo in den 2000er Jahren ver\u00f6ffentlichte.<br \/>\nDas <strong>Howe Gelb Trio<\/strong> schlie\u00dft sich an diese Periode an. <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong> wurden 2016 endg\u00fcltig ad acta gelegt (O-Ton \u2018There are more than enough <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong> records, we are not allowed to do more.\u2019), der Jazz r\u00fcckte in den musikalischen Fokus. 2016 entstand mit dem <strong>Howe Gelb Trio<\/strong> ein erstes Album: <em>Future Standards<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fhowegelbmusic%2Fposts%2F2084932921533383%3A0&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"594\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tagsdrauf lese ich in seinem Blog ein paar gute Gr\u00fcnde, warum und wie er den Jazz f\u00fcr sich entdeckte. Wie alt der Blogpost ist, vermag ich nicht zu sagen:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>third: all that jazz. what were those mysterious albums in the $1.99 cent jazz bins? man. those album covers promised a whole other experience. and why are they all wearing suits ? here we go, man. the world of Bb was about to come in big time.<br \/>\nthe funny thing is i had no one to guide me. no one to point the way. i was on my own in a small pennsylvania town. a new town. the one we had been evacuated to after the flood wiped out our old town. i didn\u2019t have any friends. i was alone with my explorations, which probably them more meaningful and allow my findings to settle in more deeply. with the blues, i had a chance of playing those tunes. 3 simple chords usually. but now i was overwhelmed now with the fabric of jazz chords that seemed other worldly. impossible stuff. but listen to that swing beat. listen to that freedom, like the players were also exporing within their own songs like i was exploring in the cheap bins. they took the listener along on such an infinite thread of soloing and managed to always bring us back in time for the song to end. how did they do that ? what is this shit ? i had learned to play 3D chess about that time, and it was the only analogy that seemed to illustrate this kind of atmosphere in music. tommy flannigan and his elegance. ahmad jamal and his impressive flow and solo prowess. mccoy tyner and his beguiling sophisticated chord combobulations. what the fuck ? i don\u2019t know how or where or when exactly, but somewhere in the dream blur of my youth i managed to see jamal and flannigan live in small jazz clubs. and per usual, i went alone. seeing them live was exactly as confusing as listening to their albums. i had no idea what was happening, but i soaked it up and left the venue inoculated with their pulverizing piano pounce. and a smile. listen to the gershwins\u2019 piano standard \u201chow long has this been going on\u201d in the hands of tommy flannigan. it\u2019s absolutely astoundingly elegant in the hands of such a master. (<a href=\"http:\/\/howegelb.com\/blog\/\">http:\/\/howegelb.com\/blog\/<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kurz vor Konzertbeginn erreiche ich das domicil. Der Saal ist gut gef\u00fcllt, vereinzelt sehe ich noch ein paar freie Pl\u00e4tze. Ich setze mich und Minuten sp\u00e4ter kommen vier M\u00e4nner auf die B\u00fchne. F\u00fcr ein Trio eigentlich eine komische Zahl, denke ich. Neben <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> und seinen standardm\u00e4\u00dfigen Mitmusikern <strong>Th\u00f8ger Lund <\/strong>(Kontrabass) und <strong>Andrew Collberg<\/strong> (Schlagzeug) haben sie <strong>JB Meijers<\/strong> mit an Bord, der die elektrische Gitarre spielen wird. Ah ha, okay.<br \/>\nDas Konzert l\u00e4uft genauso, wie ich es mir vorgestellt hatte. Nachdem die Band gem\u00fcchlich die B\u00fchne bestiegen hat, machen der Kontrabass und das Schlagzeug den Anfang, dann setzen <strong>Howe Gelbs<\/strong> Klavierakkorde ein. Das hat schon mal Flair und klingt ganz wunderbar. <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> singt leise, manchmal klingt es wie ein Hauchen, mal ist es nur ein Sprechen.<br \/>\nObwohl ich nur ein, zwei Sachen von <em>Future Standards<\/em> kenne, ist alles ist sehr vertraut und kommt mir vor wie schon tausendmal geh\u00f6rt. Klavierjazz ist eben nichts neues, und ein Jazzklavier klingt wie ein Jazzklavier klingt wie ein Jazzklavier. Aber es klingt immer toll. Die Atmosph\u00e4re im domicil ist gem\u00fctlich, zur\u00fcckgelehnt: der Kontrabass, das Wischen mit dem Besen \u00fcber die Trommeln und Becken, die leicht akzentuierte Gitarre, all das ist unaufgeregt und sch\u00f6n. Am dramatischsten klingt da noch das Klacken von <strong>Howe Gelbs<\/strong> Stiefelabs\u00e4tze auf dem B\u00fchnenboden. Das ist immer zu h\u00f6ren.<\/p>\n<p>&#8218;Too much piano is sophisticated\u2019, nach guten zwanzig Minuten erhebt sich <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> von seinem ollen Klavierschemel und greift zur Akustikgitarre. Nun ist erst einmal Schluss mit Jazz und die Band spielt ein, zwei <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong> Songs. Das klingt gleich komplett anders, passt er sehr gut in den Abend. In diesem Augenblick erinnere ich mich zur\u00fcck an ein Konzert von <strong>Grant-Lee Phillips<\/strong> im K\u00f6lner Stadtgarten. Das hatte, als er seinerzeit ein paar <strong>Grant Lee Buffalo<\/strong> Songs anspielte, \u00e4hnlichen Charme. Mein Fu\u00df wippt &#8211; wie damals im Stadtgarten &#8211; leicht im Takt der Musik. Es macht gro\u00dfen Spa\u00df, hier zu sein. Gott sei Dank habe ich mich auf den Weg ins domicil gemacht.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Once there was a time a band called <strong>Giant Sand<\/strong>\u2026\u2018, <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> erz\u00e4hlt viel zwischendurch. Anfangs ist es nur ein Getuschel und Gebrabbel, das kaum verst\u00e4ndlich ist, sp\u00e4ter dann werden daraus kleine Geschichten. Das hat Unterhaltungswert und lockert das Konzert gekonnt auf. Irgendwie merkt man, dass hier ein Mann mit riesiger B\u00fchnenerfahrung bei der Arbeit ist. M\u00fchelos geht ihm alles von der Hand, Improvisationen werden nach erstem Stirnrunzeln von der Band mitgetragen, Ansagen und Geschichten kommen wie selbstverst\u00e4ndlich daher. Aufgesetzt wirkt hier nichts. So kann er dann auch nach einer guten Stunde einfach von der B\u00fchne gehen und seine Bandkollegen ratlos zur\u00fccklassen. Minuten zuvor \u00fcberlie\u00df er <strong>JB Meijers<\/strong> die Aufmerksamkeit, indem er ihn bat, doch eines seiner St\u00fccke zu spielen. Als dieses zu Ende war, war Howe Gelb nicht mehr da. \u2018Are you thursty? I think we make a break now.\u2018 <strong>JB Meijers<\/strong> folgerte logische, als <strong>Howe Gelb<\/strong> nicht zur\u00fcckkam.<\/p>\n<p>Nach ein Pause ging es noch ein bisschen weiter, bevor die Zugabe mit einer wirklich sehr guten Jazzvariante von \u201eLike a rolling stone\u201c den Abend beendete.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all about Jazz.
