Melancholie. Sehnsucht. Liebe. Noise. Kitchens of distinction beinhalteten all dies. Als die Indiemusik erfunden wurde, gr\u00fcndeten Patrick Fitzgerald, Julian Swales und Dan Goodman in Tooting, London die Kitchens of distinction. In der Mitte der 80er, aus dem Dunstkreis der C86 Bands (auf dem NME-Sampler waren sie aber nicht vertreten). Ihre Deb\u00fctsingle „The last gasp death shuffle“ erschien 1987, das Deb\u00fctalbum zwei Jahre sp\u00e4ter. Der NME liebte sie, nat\u00fcrlich, und bezeichnete ihren melodischen Sound und Julian Swales Gitarrenspiel als Vorboten der Shoegaze Bewegung Anfang der 90er.
\nBeachtung (na ja) erlangten KOD mit ihrer 1991 erschienen \u201eDrive that fast\u201c EP. Die Single \u201eDrive that fast\u201c erreichte die TOP 100 der UK-Single Charts. Es blieb der einzige kommerzielle Lichtblick. Aber KOD waren ja Indie und so waren die Chartpositionen f\u00fcr die Band eher nebens\u00e4chlich. Den Fans war dies ebenso egal, behaupte ich jetzt einfach mal.
\nNicht aber der Plattenfirma. Als 1994 \/1995 das vierte Album \u201eCowboys and Aliens\u201c zur Ver\u00f6ffentlichung anstand, wurde zweimal nachgebessert. One little Indian, auf dem Kitchens of distinction seinerzeit ver\u00f6ffentlichten, fehlte in der Erstfassung das n\u00f6tige Hitpotenzial. Ein Zusatzsong musste her: „Come on now“. Doch auch dieser half wenig, \u201eCowboys and Aliens\u201c blieb die erhofften Verkaufszahlen schuldig. Konsequenterweise l\u00f6sten daraufhin A&M Records and One little Indian ihre Verpflichtungen und lie\u00dfen die Band fallen. Kitchens of distinction rafften sich noch einmal kurz auf, fanden ein neues Label, ver\u00f6ffentlichten mit „Feel my genie“ eine weitere Single (1996), um sich dann endg\u00fcltig aufzul\u00f6sen.
\nEins kann ich sehr zu Recht behauptet werden: Kitchens of distinction was a seminal nineties indie band, variously described as ‚criminally underrated‘. (Q Magazine).<\/p>\n

\nNun, so richtig gut kennen wir uns eigentlich nicht. Ein Album besitze ich von euch. Es ist euer vermeintlich bestes, weil erfolgreichstes. Aber ist es auch euer typischstes? Ich wei\u00df es nicht, denn ich kaufte \u201eStrange free world\u201c kurz bevor ich dem Grunge und dem College Rock vollends verfallen bin. Ein halbes Jahr sp\u00e4ter ward ihr so gut wie aus meinem musikalischen Blickfeld verschwunden. Ich hatte nicht mehr das Gef\u00fchl, euch n\u00e4her kennenlernen zu m\u00fcssen. So lie\u00df ich eure anderen Alben links liegen und kaufte lieber alles von Mudhoney und Soul Asylum.
\nErst Monate sp\u00e4ter, mit Suede, Teenage Fanclub und so, kam mir \u201eStrange free world\u201c wieder bewusster in die H\u00e4nde. Ich h\u00f6rte das Album sehr oft, \u00fcberspielte es f\u00fcrs Auto sogar auf Kassette. Ein f\u00fcr mich bedeutendes Qualit\u00e4tsmerkmal f\u00fcr ein Album. Doch da waren die Kitchens of distinction schon fast Geschichte. Ich wollte lieber auf der H\u00f6he der Zeit sein und verga\u00df euch bis letzte Woche Jahren vollends.<\/p>\n
