Bdrmm (stylised as bdrmm) is a British shoegaze band. The group currently consists of four members, Ryan Smith (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Jordan Smith (vocals, bass, synthesizer), Joe Vickers (guitar, bass) and Conor Murray (drums). The group has so far released three studio albums, Bedroom<\/em> (2020), I don’t know<\/em> (2023) and Microtonic<\/em> (2025).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So schreibt es die Musikwebseite Wikipedia und so ist das auch korrekt. Erschreckenderweise habe ich bdrmm <\/strong>zu jedem ihren Alben live gesehen. Bdrmm <\/strong>arbeiten sich langsam nach oben. Das ist die dritte Tour der Briten und die Clubs werden gr\u00f6\u00dfer. Berechtigterweise, m\u00f6chte ich sagen, denn bdrmm <\/strong>machen das sehr gut. Anfangs war da nur ein Wall of Sound aus Gitarren, in dem man sich zwar sch\u00f6n verlieren konnte, der aber auf Strecke leicht unspektakul\u00e4r blieb. Beim zweiten Album modifizierten sie diesen Ansatz schon etwas, ihr drittes Album geht nun noch einen Schritt weiter. Was der NME \u00fcber das aktuelle Album der Band schreibt, ist wahr:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the album you\u2019d expect from Bdrmm, makers of the \u201cmodern-day shoegaze classic\u201d. The Hull quartet have stepped away from the pedalboard and onto the dancefloor for their third record, sounding like they\u2019ve stumbled out of the rave in the early morning hours, unsure of what\u2019s real and what\u2019s not. Welcome to the world of \u2018Microtonic\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Ich war also sehr gespannt, was mich an diesem Samstagabend im relativ leeren Schanzenstra\u00dfenviertel erwarten wird. Wenn im E-Werk und\/oder Palladium Veranstaltungen sind, brummt hier der B\u00e4r. Parkpl\u00e4tze sind dann Mangelware und es herrscht gro\u00dfer Trubel auf den Gehwegen und Stra\u00dfen. An diesem Abend wird jedoch nur der Club Volta bespielt und entsprechend wenig Leute sind unterwegs. Die Mitarbeiter im Five Guys haben wenig bis gar nichts zu tun, das Kaffeeb\u00fcdchen gegen\u00fcber ist geschlossen und die Parkplatzsuche ist schnell erfolgreich abgeschlossen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der Club Volta ist ordentlich besucht. Ich platze in den Auftritt der Vorband Attic Ocean<\/strong>. Und die kenne ich bereits von der letzten bdrmm<\/strong> Tour. Auch damals supportete die D\u00fcsseldorfer Shoegaze\/Dreampop Band um S\u00e4ngerin Hanni bdrmm <\/strong>bei ihren Deutschlandkonzerten. Musikalisch passte das damals und es passt auch an diesem Abend sehr gut. Attic Ocean<\/strong> machen seit 2022 zusammen Musik. Eine erste EP ver\u00f6ffentlichten sie 2023 (the heavy blue and then after<\/em>), eine zweite EP (Retriever<\/em>) haben sie just herausgebracht. Als Einfl\u00fcsse zitieren sie selbst Bands wie die Cocteau Twins<\/strong>, Slowdive<\/strong> oder My bloody valentine<\/strong> oder Ride<\/strong>. Die \u00fcblichen Verd\u00e4chtigen aus dem Shoegaze-Kosmos also. Attic Ocean <\/strong>klingen nicht schlecht, f\u00fcr Menschen meines Alters gibt es allerdings wenig Neues in ihrer Musik zu entdecken. Im Club Volta werden sie wohlwollend empfangen. Und das nicht nur von Freunden und Familie, die augenscheinlich in den vorderen Reihen stehen: Die Eltern drehen Handyvideos, die Freundin singt leise aber begeistert mit. Da Attic Ocean<\/strong> musikalisch so gut zu bdrmm <\/strong>passen, hat die Stimmung bereits vor der Umbaupause main act Niveau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoegaze ist nicht tot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Anschluss dann bdrmm<\/strong>. Ihr aktuelles Album Microtonic ist seit ein paar Tagen drau\u00dfen, die dazugeh\u00f6rige Tour startet auf dem Kontinent mit diesem Konzert. Alles ist also noch ein bisschen neu. Bdrmm<\/strong> starten mit neuen Songs ins Konzert und direkt erkenne ich auch visuell, dass sich musikalisch ein bisschen was ge\u00e4ndert hat. Drei Keyboards\/Synthesizer anstatt drei Gitarren sind das Instrument der Wahl f\u00fcr Ryan Smith<\/strong>, Jordan Smith<\/strong> und Joe Vickers<\/strong>. Zu Bedroom <\/em>Zeiten bediente einzig Jordan Smith<\/strong> einen Synthesizer. Songs aus dieser Phase h\u00f6re ich verst\u00e4rkt gegen Ende des Konzertes (\u201eHappy\u201c, \u201e(Un)happy\u201c). Vorher bestimmt die aktuelle Platte die Setlist. Acht Songs vom neuen Album stehen auf dem Plan, also alles bis auf \u201egoit\u201c und \u201eIn the electric field\u201c; Songs, die jeweils fremde K\u00fcnstler*Innen featuren und eventuell deshalb hinten runtergefallen sind. Wie dem auch sei, das Setup ist gut und dancy. Die Synthies treiben die Sounds nach vorne und bilden – zu dritt gespielt – einen herrlichen Wall of Sound, ohne dabei un-catchy zu klingen. Es sind gute Indiedisco Tracks, die bdrmm <\/strong>auf Microtonic <\/em>zusammengestellt haben. Live ist das mehr als offensichtlich und es macht irre Spa\u00df, dem ganzen zuzuh\u00f6ren.
Das Konzert ist unspektakul\u00e4r. Aber gut. Bdrmm<\/strong> haben gute neue Tendenzen in ihren Songs und schaffen es, diese mit den guten alten Shoegaze Tugenden, die sie definitiv haben, in einen harmonischen Einklang zu bringen. Bdrmm<\/strong> sollte man weiter im Auge haben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In diesem Sinn: Hull 4, London 0. (Gott wie einfallslos, \u00e4hnliches schrieb ich auch nach dem Dortmunder Konzert von bdrmm<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
